Description: For this project we had to design and build a theme board game in a group. This board game had to have several reactions throughout the game and we had to describe how and why this reaction occurred. We made our board game have a celebrity theme and we called it "Hollywood Life". Our first reaction was pouring copper chloride onto aluminum foil. The copper chloride had broken apart the aluminum foil and changed the color of the foil to a brownish red color. The second reaction was Ammonium sulfate and copper nitrate. The copper nitrate is light blue and the ammonium sulfate is clear, but when mixed together they make a dark blue color. The last chemical reaction was blowing up a balloon by mixing baking soda and vinegar. We put the baking soda into a balloon and the vinegar into a glass tube. Then we poured in the baking soda and the reaction caused the balloon to blow up. We also made a LED light to make the Hollywood sign stand out and look like it came right out of a movie.
Concepts: Atom: the basic unit of a chemical element. Proton:a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign. Neutron:a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen. Electron:a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids. Compound:a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture. Synthesis Reaction: a type of reaction in which multiple reactants combine to form a single product. Decomposition Reaction:is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds. Single Replacement Reaction:is a type of chemical reaction where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound. Double Replacement Reaction: is a type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products. Cation:a positively charged ion Anion:a negatively charged ion
Reflection: During this project, I worked well with my group because we communicated very well on who is going to do what and we could all agree on an idea for the project. The second peak was that I was able to contribute by painting and building things for our board. There were also things that didn't go well for the project. The first thing that didn't go well was time management. We focused a lot of time making the board game instead of coming up with better chemical reactions that could have made it stand out more. The second thing that I need to work on is taking a more leadership role. I was only listening more instead of taking more charge to make our game better. All in all the project worked out very well and I will continue to work on being more of a leader.
